How This Calculator Works
Enter the date printed on your temporary license plate (this is the issue date, not the date you drove the car off the lot) and select your state. The calculator adds the state's official validity period to that date to give you your exact expiration deadline.
⚠️ Count From the Date on the Tag
The expiration is calculated from the date printed on the tag, not the day you first drove the car. If a dealer issues a tag on a Monday and you pick up the car on Wednesday, those first two days already count against your window.
What To Do As Your Tag Approaches Expiration
- 30 days before: Confirm with your dealer that your title has been submitted to the state. Ask for an estimated delivery date for permanent plates.
- 15 days before: Follow up again. If the dealer says plates are "in processing," ask for written confirmation and a tracking number if available.
- 7 days before: If plates have not arrived and no firm timeline exists, contact the dealer and request a new temporary tag to be issued immediately.
- Day of expiration: Do not drive the vehicle. Contact your dealer or DMV immediately.
States With Very Short Windows
If you're in one of these states, you need to act immediately after purchase — don't wait:
- Rhode Island: 5 days — go to the DMV the same day or next morning
- Massachusetts: 7 days — schedule your registration appointment before you buy
- Mississippi: 7 days — visit the county tax collector immediately
- Kentucky: 15 days — visit the county clerk's office within the first few days
