✅ New Car Buyer Checklist

The day you get the tag: Write the expiration date in your calendar immediately.
Photograph the temp tag — keep a digital copy with the tag number and expiration.
Confirm your dealer has submitted title paperwork to the state.
Verify insurance is active and the policy covers this specific vehicle.
Day 7: Call dealer title department. Ask for submission date and status.
Day 15: Follow up again. Get a written timeline if plates haven't arrived.
Day 25 (for 30-day tags): If no plates, go to dealer in person and request a new temp tag.
Keep bill of sale, insurance card, and title copy in the vehicle at all times.

🚨 Tag Expired — Do This Now

1.STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY. Park in a legal spot. Do not move the vehicle.
2.Dealer purchase: Call the title department (not sales). Ask for submission date and request a new temp tag.
3.Private sale: Gather: signed title + bill of sale + insurance + ID + cash for fees.
4.Visit your county DMV, county clerk, or tax collector office today or first thing tomorrow.
5.Ask for a temporary operating permit while permanent registration is processed.
6.Document all dealer communications in writing. Save every text, email, and call log.
7.If dealer refuses to help: file complaint at your state DMV's dealer licensing division.

🤝 Private Sale Checklist

Before the sale:

Run VIN check (Carfax, AutoCheck, or NMVTIS at vehiclehistory.gov)
View physical title — verify seller's name matches and no lien stamps
Arrange insurance to cover the vehicle BEFORE purchase is final
Research your county DMV/clerk office hours and location

Day of the sale:

Get signed bill of sale (VIN, price, date, both signatures)
Get properly endorsed title (seller signs front correctly)
Go directly to DMV/county office for transit permit BEFORE driving
Record your temp tag expiration date immediately

💰 Fine Ranges by Category

Base fines only — court costs typically double or triple the total.

StateFine Range
California$196 fixed
Texas$150 – $400+
Connecticut$150 – $300
New York$128 – $168
Nevada$100 – $250
Florida$116 – $250
Ohio$100 – $250
Most states$50 – $200
Kentucky / IN$20 – $100

Fix-it ticket in most states: resolve registration before court date to reduce or dismiss fine.

⚠ Key Rules to Remember:

Count from the date printed on the tag, not when you drove home. Shortest: Rhode Island (5 days). Longest: California, Illinois, New York (90 days). Metal plates required: Texas (Jul 2025), Georgia (2022), Michigan. Handwritten tags are never legal. A replacement tag does not reset the clock. Always carry: bill of sale, title copy, and insurance card. Use the tools at temptag.guide to calculate your exact deadline and generate state-specific checklists.
